The Wall is a changing display that celebrates creatives from across the Wakefield district. This Autumn we're welcoming artist Helen Thomas!

Helen Thomas is a painter who works from a studio at The Art House, Wakefield. Her paintings draw attention to often overlooked plants that grow in urban spaces.

Helen usually paints with acrylics on paper and board. Her paintings range from the size of a postcard to large-scale pieces. 

Helen exhibits nationally. In 2025, Huddersfield Art Gallery curated Helen’s solo exhibition ‘No patch of green too small’ at the University of Huddersfield. One of Helen’s paintings was recently acquired for Manchester Art Gallery’s permanent collection.

George Street to Mulberry Way

Helen has produced a series of giclée prints featuring compositions specially selected from her paintings of wild-plants and organisms in Wakefield city centre.

The exhibition also includes a print from a painting of a species of lichen, from the Cladonia genus, which she spotted on the heathland at Walton Colliery Nature Park.
