The Sleeping Tree is an immersive sound and light experience transporting the audience to the Sumatran rainforest in Indonesia.

Every night, deep in the forests of North Sumatra, Siamang Gibbons sleep in special sleeping trees, choosing one of six trees for the family to return to each evening - the same six trees that they have used for generations.

The Sleeping Tree connects us to the unique wildlife of this rainforest through a rich soundscape, focusing on the calls of one of the remaining Siamang Gibbon families as they wake up, move through the forest, and rest. The audio also includes sounds from rare animals like the Sumatran elephant, hornbills, and orangutans.

The audio was collected during a three month-long mapping process of this rare ecosystem, with the research helping to advocate to protect secondary rainforest from deforestation.

The Sleeping Tree was created by Invisible Flock, multi-award-winning artists based at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, with the help of LEAP (Landscape, Ecology and Primatology) at Bournemouth University and the Leuser Conservation Forum, and rangers and primatologists in Sumatra.

Originally Commissioned by Brighton Festival and premiered as part of the Brighton Festival 2023.
